Words for St. Patrick's Day (A1/A2)-Beginner to Intermediate ESL Vocabulary, Speaking & Writing Lesson with Interactive Game

St. Patrick's Day isn't celebrated (or even commonly known) where I am, so I wasn't sure whether or not to make any related products, but...there aren't that many special occasions in March, I'm saving lessons on spring for April, and today a student asked about St. Patrick's Day, saying they had seen a video talking about it online, so I decided I might as well make some materials.

Words for St. Patrick's Day contains an interactive point-and-click game to help beginner to intermediate ESL students learn vocabulary associated with St. Patrick's Day. This lesson is part of the Words for Holiday bundle, which contains lessons for Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, Easter, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.

Lesson materials include an interactive gameplay slideset, vocabulary slides with embedded audio files, discussion questions, and writing prompts, so students can practice reading, listening, writing, and speaking all in one lesson!

The gameplay slideset contains two types of games. The first is a single-page game (“Put the items in the cupboard”) with multiple items shown alongside a list that students can use to learn the English words of everyday items. When students click on the correct item, it will automatically move into the cupboard to the top right of the slide.

The second is a multi-page game (“Click the correct item to answer the question”) that students can use to learn new verbs, adjectives, and concepts associated with the topic at hand. There are a total of ten questions. Students will be able to move onto the next slide only after they have clicked on the correct answer.

The lesson also contains a vocabulary and discussion slideset with vocabulary slides, discussion slides, and writing prompt slides.

Each vocabulary slide has an embedded audio file that can be played by clicking on the blue audio icon at the top left of the slide:

Students can discuss associated topics using the prompts listed on the discussion slides:

Finally, students can practice writing with the new vocabulary they have learned. The writing prompt slide asks them to use five of the new words they have learned from the gameplay slide, but you can adjust the number of words used based on student levels if necessary. (Beginner students may find it easier to write five separate sentences rather than one whole paragraph.)

This lesson can be used as a standalone lesson, which usually takes around an hour, or the game can be used on its own as a quick (10-15 minute) icebreaker for a more in-depth lesson on St. Patrick's Day.

This lesson contains:

  • One 28-page vocabulary & discussion slideset (PowerPoint) containing 18 vocabulary slides with embedded audio, 3 pages with discussion questions, and 2 pages with writing prompts and examples
