With February just around the corner, I've already started posting up some Valentine's Day lessons. The latest addition to my TPT store is this Interactive Valentine's Day Escape Room called Be My Valentine.
The storyline is quite simple. We have Tommy, who really likes a girl in his class called Emma, and wants to ask her if she'll be his Valentine on Valentine's Day:
But of course he can't just ask Emma if she'll be his Valentine. That would be too easy. He needs to do a lot of things, like make her a Valentine's Day card, write a poem, buy flowers, and pick out a present for Emma, and to do all those things, he'll need some help from your students.
For example, to make a Valentine's Day card, he'll need to collect some stationery:
(While only four items need to be collected here, I usually spend some time going through the English names of the other items with my students too, as they may not know the names of all the things. We also usually spend a few minutes discussing other stationery items they have in their bags.)
To write his poem, Tommy will need to find words that rhyme:
(At this point, if you are so inclined, and if your students are up to it, you could ask them to compose their own "Roses are red" type poems for extra bonus points. If your students are more advanced, they can even try their hand at writing original poetry at the end of the lesson.)
Once Tommy has collected everything he needs, he gets to ask Emma that very important question:
This escape room has 16 slides, 5 of which are interactive question/activity slides. The lesson also comes with 10 vocabulary slides that look like this:
I tend to use this lesson as an icebreaker for students at the higher-intermediate level, but I've also used it as a complete lesson for students at the beginner to intermediate level, where I open the floor to free discussion after going through all slides and ask students to share their Valentine's Day experiences.
This lesson contains:
- A 5-page Teacher's Guide (PDF)
- A 16-page gameplay slideset (PowerPoint Slide Show)
- A 12-page vocabulary slideset (PowerPoint) which includes definitions for 10 words or phrases
